About Civil Society Bahamas
Institutional Identity
Civil Society Bahamas (CSB) is the umbrella organization and national apex body representing civil society organizations across The Bahamas. Established to serve as a unifying platform for the sector, CSB brings together nonprofit organizations, community-based groups, faith-based organizations, and civil society actors to advance inclusive, accountable, and sustainable national development. As the recognized third pillar of governance, Civil Society Bahamas plays a coordinating and representative role within the national development ecosystem, bridging civil society, government, and the private sector through structured dialogue, consultation, and collaboration.
Our Mission
The mission of Civil Society Bahamas is to serve as the national apex body for civil society by coordinating, representing, and strengthening nonprofit, community-based, and faith-based organizations across The Bahamas. Through structured consultation, policy engagement, and collaboration, CSB supports participatory governance, ethical leadership, and an enabling environment for civil society to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Our Vision
Civil Society Bahamas envisions a respected, accountable, and inclusive civil society sector that is actively engaged as a partner in national development, contributes constructively to policy and decision-making processes, and supports the social, economic, and community well-being of The Bahamas.
Our Origin & Mandate
Civil Society Bahamas was formed in response to the need for a cohesive, credible, and representative voice in civil society capable of engaging meaningfully in national, regional, and international development processes. Rather than operating as a service-delivery organization, CSB exists to strengthen the civil society ecosystem itself by coordinating civil society participation in national development processes; facilitating dialogue and consultation across sectors and islands; advancing policy engagement and advocacy on issues affecting communities; supporting good governance, accountability, and leadership within the sector; and representing civil society in regional and international forums. Through this mandate, CSB ensures that civil society perspectives are informed, organized, and effectively integrated into decision-making spaces.
Role Within the National Development Ecosystem
Civil Society Bahamas operates at the systems level, supporting alignment, amplifying collective civil society voice, and strengthening sector-wide capacity without replacing or competing with individual organizations. Through structured consultation, advisory input, and policy dialogue, CSB engages with government, collaborates with private-sector partners on shared development goals, and represents civil society in regional and international forums. This positioning enables CSB to function as a trusted intermediary, ensuring that civil society engagement is constructive, evidence-informed, and aligned with national development priorities.
Governance and Ethical Foundation
Civil Society Bahamas is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by standing committees established to ensure adequate oversight, transparency, and accountability. CSB’s governance framework is reinforced by formal policies, committee handbooks, and codes of conduct that guide decision-making and organizational behavior. Ethical leadership, confidentiality, and accountability are foundational expectations for all CSB board members, committee members, and affiliates. This framework ensures that CSB operates with integrity, consistency, and accountability in its engagements on behalf of the civil society sector.

Leadership Perspective
Message from the President
Civil Society Bahamas was established to strengthen the foundations of participatory governance in The Bahamas. As the apex body for civil society, CSB’s responsibility is to ensure that engagement is structured, ethical, and informed by collective input rather than individual interest.
Our work is guided by consultation, dialogue, and evidence, and grounded in respect for the independence and diversity of civil society organizations. Through this approach, CSB continues to support a civil society sector that is engaged, credible, and positioned to contribute meaningfully to national development.
— President, Civil Society Bahamas
